HMS ROSE --- The ROSE is a replica of a 1757 Royal Navy Frigate --- Length Overall-- 179 ft.-- Beam-- 32 ft. -- Built --1970 Lunenburg Nova Scotia Canada, -- Registered-- Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA

Photographs of the Rose were taken during the ships visit to Thunder Bay Ontario Canada.
The Rose is presently starring in a movie being made ( 2001- Master and Commander ) Her name has changed to HMS Surprise.
The original HMS Rose was a naval frigate and seldom carried passengers, however, it gives a realistic view of the size of ship our ancestors may have travelled on to reach North America.

A Good Connection

Dad was always looking for relatives no matter where he travelled. Other than family in Port Arthur/Thunder Bay and in Sault Ste. Marie there was not much to go on. Sherlocks, it seemed, had left Prince Edward Island, and scattered to the four winds without looking back. A great break came ---

" Ivan had written to Mrs. Oulton, who apparently had a museum in Alberton, which he visited in 1970. In 1975 she sent his letter to the Prince Edward Island Public Archives. His address and letter were on file there. My cousin, David Alcorn, while on a trip to PEI brought back all the information that was in the Sherlock file. David was just starting the family research and this file gave us a start. He gave me Ivan's address and in the summer of 1993 I wrote a note to see if I could make a connection with our Canadian relatives. After several weeks and when I had just about given up getting an answer I received my first of many letters from Ivan , signing his letters, from your 42nd cousin. His address had changed a couple of times over the years so it took a while for my note to reach him, thanks to a persistent postal service and some other Sherlocks up there in Canada. Found Ivan's son Bud, on the computer ( with which he has brought us a long ways). Thanks to my " 42nd cousin" his son Bud, and my cousin David Alcorn, I've been able to compile a good deal of family history." --- Lee Grainger ( Sherlock) -- 2nd Cousin of Ivan Adolphus Sherlock
