WHERE I"VE BEEN -- WHERE I'M HEADIN'
Dr. Joseph Patten Charles Sherlock married Emma Frances Cannon ( midwife ) in Prince Edward Island 1829. If our dates are right he would be 41. Very little is known before this time.
A family story that seems to originates in Prince Edward Island at least as early as 1880 has him as a surgeon on Admiral Nelsons ship HMS Victory during the Battle of Trafalgar 1805.( 17 years old ) So far research has not turned up any Sherlock on any of the ships at that battle.
He is not registered in medical training or as a doctor in Ireland.
Another story puts him on HMS Shannon in the battle with the USS Chesapeake 1813 where he lost an ear. Again research shows no trace so far.
There were medical schools in Scotland and England at the time-circa early 1800's.
If anyone is doing look-ups in the archives of the various UK medical schools circa 1800 please keep a look out for Joseph Patten Charles Sherlock.
Because of his age when he married in PEI ( 41 )it has been suggested there may have been a previous marriage.
If anyone has a Joseph Sherlock that moves on/ disappears in the early 1800's please let me know.
The search for the early life of my GGGrandfather continues---
Mary Brennan Sherlock and Edward Sherlock
Nancy Coulter kindly offered photos of Sherlocks from Co. Sligo, one of which is Mary Brennan Sherlock and Edward Sherlock.( see photo page ). The man in the background resembles PEI Sherlocks but is unknown. My father remarked on first seeing the photo --- " That looks like my father " --who was Ernest Stanley Sherlock b. Alberton PEI .
There is a remarkable likeness between Edward Sherlock , b. 1844 Lun Cloon , Co Sligo , Ireland and Jeremiah Sherlock b, 1877 Alberton Prince Edward Island although no connection has been found yet.
-- Edward was the son of Matthew Sherlock and Mary Drury Sherlock
Wife of Edward---Mary Brennan Sherlock-- b 1834 Lun Cloon , daughter of Mary Spellman Brennan and Patrick Brennan.
Children were Mary Margaret Sherlock b. Aug 1898, Lun Cloon, moved to US circa 1915. d. 1967, San Diego California.
